The TABU development project, spearheaded by a collaborative team of five students from various disciplines at VCU’s Da Vinci Center, is dedicated to addressing the critical issue of bathroom accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. Extensive research and community engagement have highlighted the widespread need for innovative solutions, particularly concerning the absence of first-floor baths. This absence disproportionately affects aging populations, individuals coping with spinal cord injuries, and those experiencing temporary or permanent movement disabilities. By delving deeper into the lived experiences of these communities, the team has gained invaluable insights into the specific challenges they face and the urgent demand for accessible bathroom solutions.

In navigating the project’s development, the team has moved beyond mere compliance with ADA standards, recognizing the limitations they may pose to true innovation. Instead, they are charting a course towards creating an affordable yet adaptable base model for accessible bathrooms. This model will offer customizable options, ensuring that users can tailor their bathrooms to meet their individual needs and preferences. By adopting this approach, the team aims to not only address the functional requirements of accessibility but also empower users to personalize their spaces, fostering a sense of dignity and independence.

Crucially, the TABU project is grounded in real-life perspectives and feedback. Stakeholder engagement, including input from Team Livability has guided the team’s design decisions. This process ensures that the final product is not only technically sound but also practical and user-friendly. As the project progresses, the team’s focus will shift towards prototyping while concurrently refining their marketing strategies. Through a combination of innovation, empathy-driven design, and community collaboration, the TABU project is poised to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the accessibility landscape, exemplifying the power of interdisciplinary teamwork in driving positive change.

Stay tuned to see how this collaboration unfolds!
